Reading Bluerays from a physical disk on VLC

Friday, February 7th 2025

Recently, a friend asked me for help. They wanted to read a Wakfu Blu-ray they bought from their USB Blu-ray reader, preferably on VLC.

Being a cheap fuck, I've had no idea how to do this. But apparently, you can do this using a software called makemkv. It has the ability to read Blu-rays from your physical drive on its own, but can also integrate into VLC so you can read them from there too. How convenient.

If you're reading this, you probably want to know how to do this, too. I ain't gonna waste your time, so here goes :

  1. Make sure your VLC is up-to-date. Update it if not.
    1. Go fetch and install makemkv from here.
      1. Launch makemkv. It might say your key is invalid, expired, or missing. That's cause the software will be paid later on. It's currently in beta, and is free during said beta.
        1. Go here to get the free beta key, put it in the software, and ta-daa.
          1. This will work for 60 days. Whenever it's expired, you can go to the page above again for the latest key. Do yourself a favour and bookmark it or something.
          2. Go to Preferences > Integration. Click the checkbox for VLC.
            1. Open VLC. Go to Media > Read from Disk (mine's in Portuguese, adapt to what it's actually saying) > Blu-ray > Select the correct drive
              1. Shit should work !

A bit harder than for a DVD, but whatever. At least it's free for now...
